Experimentation and Social Media

Thoughts by Panelist Kevin Kennedy, PCG Campbell, Ford Racing

Come to the Summit to engage with Kevin and 9 other speakers

A wise, not-so-old social media guru once told me forever ago (or, in this case, one year ago):  “The great thing about social media right now is that because it’s still emerging, there’s not one right or wrong way to approach it.  Experiment.  Try new things.  Things that work - keep doing.  Things that don’t - stop.”

In a lot of ways, that’s still great advice.

You see, in the motorsport world, the social media aspect of the sport is truly still emerging, with drivers, teams, sponsors, manufacturers, and even media, all trying to see what works and resonates when they’re trying to communicate.

The one common factor among these constituents, however, is that all of them are trying to reach the same group of people – the race fan.

With the traditional media market rapidly changing, and the power and the capability of the internet still growing, this “direct to consumer,” or in this case, “direct to race fan” communication is growing more and more important as a way to help return additional ROI to the racing investment.

That said, I’m looking forward to this first Social Media Motorsport Conference in Charlotte for a lot of reasons … a chance to network, to meet others in the racing business, a chance to hear other opinions on what may be working and what may not in social media outreach.

I look forward to sharing thoughts, but look forward just as much to learning from what others are doing.

After all, there’s a lot of experimenting still to be had.
